As Singaporeans continue to mourn the loss of our Founding Father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, we go on the streets and online to find out what people have got to say about the great man…
Many things have been said about the man…but here are some honourable mentions:
“Without Mr Lee, we wouldn’t have a Singapore that is as modernized and advanced as it is today. We owe a lot to Mr Lee. Even in his old age, he was still contributing to Singapore, which is something admirable.”
– Jimmy Cheong, owner of a beauty business
“Singapore might not be as successful today if not for Mr Lee Kuan Yew. We should be grateful for the man. He brought us from Third World to a First World country. Through attracting businesses to Singapore, he has helped to open up the Singapore market and created job opportunities for Singaporeans. And through his policies we know that every Singapore can own a home, unlike other countries where homes can be costly.”
– Mr Clement Fang, 44, owner of audio business
“He is a very good leader, without him, I don’t think we would have progressed and come so far. I know he couldn’t have pleased everybody, but I really admire his persistence in pushing through policies. He is really a man or integrity and intelligence. I thought that he thought out of the box by making Singapore attractive to foreign investors, thereby creating jobs for our locals. And investors really have lots of confidence in Singapore.”
– Ms Lim, 40s, Accountant
“He is somebody remarkable who did a lot to transform Singapore to what it is today. So I think even if we know him personally or not, the least we could do is to come and pay our last respects to him. The workers of Singapore owe it to him, that we are able to work without any age, language, race or religious discrimination, this is something we ought to be thankful to him for.”
– Seah Keng Tia, petrochemical technician
“All along, Mr Lee Kuan Yew has always been a friend and brother to the Labour movement, so we (DBS Staff Union) decided to come by to the tribute centre to pay our last respects to him. Without him as our Founding Father to lay the ground for us, we cannot be where we are today. He has built a home for many generations. This will really be treasured in our lives.”
– Nora Kang, President of DBS Staff Union
On social media, people have also been posting positive comments of Mr Lee:
Someone once told me that the true measure of a man is by the impressions left behind after he leaves.
And judging by the comments and words spoken of him, it is no wonder why Mr Lee Kuan Yew is well-loved by Singaporeans and all over the world.
