The following letter was sent to us came from Celine Cho, Executive, 26.
I visited Mr Tan Whee Boon earlier this morning, and I’m glad to see he was in good spirits before his operation this afternoon. After reading his story and the efforts pulled together by Singaporeans to raise money for him, I felt very heartened and compelled to write this short letter about my chat with Mr Tan.
Though a complete stranger to him, he remained very warm and friendly. When I asked him about the operation this afternoon, he said with much positivity and determination in his eyes: “I am prepared for it”. He sure is one brave man.
He shared about how thankful he is for the help and generosity rendered to him by Singaporeans who started fundraising efforts to help Mr Tan; the sole breadwinner of the family. He also mentioned how his fellow union leaders and members from the Chemical Industries Employees’ Union, visits him frequently at the hospital, and have started processing the paperwork for various grants eligible for him.
Apparently today’s surgery is only for the amputation of his hands, and the date for next op on his leg is yet to be set. Until then, he will need to spend the next few days and weeks in his hospital bed, and more costs will be incurred. I will use the “I’m not trying to sell you anything, but could I have a minute of your time” line, and appeal to readers, from one Singaporean to another Singaporean for our fellow Singaporean, to do what we can to help in any way we can to ease this unfortunate ordeal that Mr Tan is going through. I’m confident that we can find in ourselves the thoughtfulness and compassion to help someone in need.
