FIVE GE FIGHTS TO WATCH

Fellow Singaporeans,

WELCOME to GE 2015.

We are shortlisting the fights worth drinking honey the night before, considering what shirt colour to wear, and attending rallies for. And our reasons for it.

Here’s FIVE fights we’re starting with on our MUST-WATCH List

POTONG PASIR SMC

Who Should Pay Attention To This Fight: All local historians.

You Should Know: The constituency’s most famous MP is opposition leader Chiam See Tong who beat Sitoh twice, once in 2001 and again in 2006. The PAP gained the seat in 2011 when the party’s Sitoh Yih Pin defeated Chiam’s successor, Lina Chiam (Yes, Chiam’s wife) by a mere 0.72%.

What To Expect: The limelight is neither on Sitoh nor Lina; it’s on Chiam See Tong, who, despite his age, is still very active, and given his track record in politics, a highly respected man.

JALAN BESAR SMC

Who Should Pay Attention To This Fight: Jalan Besar People, PAP supporters, and Statisticians

You Should Know: Collectively, Yaacob’s team nearly 60 years of experience serving the residents, and some people say they will be the PAP team to out-perform all the other PAPvsWP configurations.

What To Expect: In a few words. “We don’t know.” It has been reported that there will be an unusual problem for 102,454 voters who will find themselves in the revived Jalan Besar GRC: The new four-member group representation constituency will encompass the wards of five MPs. These include Yaacob Ibrahim’s Kolam Ayer ward, Denise Phua’s Kampong Glam and Edwin Tong’s Jalan Besar – all in the current Moulmein-Kallang GRC…

ALJUNIED GRC

Who Should Pay Attention To This Fight: PAP supporters and WP Supporters

You Should Know: Word on the street this PAP has sent a “suicide squad” for this one. But that just means they don’t know Yeo Guat Kwang, the prodigal son.

What To Expect: Chief Low Thia Khiang needs no introduction. The onus is on Yeo to bring it. Yeo Guat Kwang, a long-time PAP veteran, and in fact a heavyweight anchor. Yeo has been a PAP politician since 1997, and has generally served the same area. Get to know Yeo. Yeo could very well be the PAP’s saving grace. Despite his move out of Aljunied in 2011, he has maintained a strong relationship with the grassroots and residents.

ANG MO KIO GRC

Who Should Pay Attention To This Fight: LHL fans, and people who don’t have a TV at home.

You Should Know: Roy Ngerng and M Ravi are going to bring it. Like how at Nomination Day, M Ravi actually shouted “Vote for P-A-… *yikes* I mean R-P!!!” to his fans (all 15 of them)

What To Expect: A lot of laughs, memes, GIFs and gaffs.

EAST COAST GRC

Screen Shot 2015-09-01 at 3.45.31 pm

Who Should Pay Attention To This Fight: Fans of Politics.

You Should Know: East Coast was the PAP’s worst-performing GRC that won (does that make sense? yes.) in the 2011 GE. estimated 99,015 voters.

What To Expect: Experience vs Novelty – PAP’s experienced team is led by Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say and comprises Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry and National Development Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for National Development and Defence Mohamad Maliki Osman, and two-term backbencher Jessica Tan. The median age is >50 Challenging them will be the WP slate led by NCMP Gerald Giam, 37, whose other team members are: sociologist Daniel Goh, 42, research and consultancy firm CEO Leon Perera, 44, and ex-librarian Mohamed Fairoz Shariff, 36.
