Chee Soon Juan Loses “Support” Of the Chiams and Lee Wei Ling

On the day before cooling off day of the Bukit Batok By-election, there has been a flurry of comments against underdog Chee Soon Juan. Notably, former comrades Chiam See Tong and wife Lina Chiam, and noted neurologist Lee Wei Ling have come out to tell their version of events.

The Chiams: We don’t endorse Chee Soon Juan

Earlier in April, Line Chiam had also posted on Facebook that Dr Chee had not sought permission to use Mr Chiam’s image in SDP’s newsletter and they do not endorse any candidate in the Bukit Batok by-election.

Recently, according to six-six, the Chiams have pointed out a “distortion of the facts” regarding claims by SDP and their supporters that Dr Chee Soon Juan had willingly and selflessly made way for Chiam to head the party (SDP).

The Chiams say that contrary to these claims, Mr Chiam was offered a non-CEC position as Honorary Chairman, or a similar position that will acknowledge his role as the founder of SDP, but there was no mention about returning to the party as its leader.

SDP had set a one-week deadline for the Chiams to accept the proposal, which didn’t sit well with the latter either.

The Chiams called SDP’s approach to proposals as “empty gestures” and wanted to set the record right about their wish to not be “used to further one man’s political ambitions”.

This clarification tallies with the Chiams’ interview they gave Lianhe Zaobao in 2010. You can read more about the interview here.

Dr Lee Wei Ling: I will never support Chee Soon Juan

After rumours circulated about Dr Lee Wei Ling signing a petition asking to stop attacking Chee Soon Juan’s character, she has clarified in a Facebook post that “This is false, I have a very poor opinion of Dr Chee, and do not think he is fit to be in Parliament . The man has not changed at all, though he is now posing as a changed man, using his family.”

It has been said that I have signed a petition asking to stop attacking Chee Soon Juan’s character. This is false, I have a very poor opinion of Dr Chee, and do not think he is fit to be in Parliament . The man has not changed at all, though he is now posing as a changed man, using his family.

Last week, he allowed his speakers to Attack David Ong and then came on stage and pretended to be magnanimous and said we should not attack character. When pressed, he admitted he knew what the fellow speakers were going to say.

What do you say about such a man? And having made character attacks, when this is pointed out, he then played the martyr, saying his character is being attacked.

why does he not deal with facts: why did he in the first place agree to his speakers attacking David Ong’s character, while pretending to be above it all?

I will never support such a person. And I believe that his true nature should be fully exposed- cheating NUS, telling untruths all his life, slippery – And Singaporeans should decide whether such a person should be in Parliament. Is it possible that he has truly reformed?! Just look at what he did last week.

Chee Soon Juan: Bukit Batok is like an MRT station and lack of democracy in Singapore

With less than 9 hours to cooling-off day, Chee Soon Juan has one last chance to address these comments by the Chiams and Lee Wei Ling at his fourth Bukit Batok rally tonight.

Even if he loses, Mr Chee has a back-up plan to explain this: lack of a democratic system and media freedom in Singapore.

Does he mean Bukit Batok residents’ votes aren’t important, and he should be entitled to more media attention?

Let’s see if he will stay loyal to Bukit Batok MRT, or take Singapore on another ride through his political ambitions.
