The heart of the matter, is the matter of the heart
Yesterday I misquoted the lyrics of the song “Somebody” by Depeche Mode to someone, and he literally flipped. He said, “I do not tolerate a misrepresentation of Depeche Mode” and promptly reminded me what the correct words are:-
“She will listen to me, when I want to speak, about the world we live in, and life in general
Though my views may be wrong, they may even be perverted, she’ll hear me out and won’t easily be converted
to my way of thinking, in fact she’ll often disagree
but at the end of it all, she will understand me”
It would be presumptuous of me, but I would hazard a guess, that the crux of the Hougang battle is whether the candidate can understand and represent what is closest to their hearts. The short excerpt of the Depeche Mode song above captures that.
The people of Hougang have sacrificed upgrading and other ‘goodies’ over the years, to nurture the opposition of Singapore. They call it a “voice” – Though my views may be wrong, do you hear me out and understand me?
While the PAP has tried, through the years, to court them with “resources”, they held on to this need for a “voice”.
So, the question really is, can Desmond cherish the Hougang spirit and their desire for a “voice” as his own?
To court someone, love the part dearest to him. If not, he will react like my friend did when I murdered his song. The heart of the matter, is the matter of the heart.
