Happy National Day, Majulah Singapura!

“It was like any other Monday morning in Singapore until the music stopped. At 10am, the pop tunes on the radio were cut off abruptly. Stunned listeners heard the announcer solemnly readout a proclamation – 90 words that changed the lives of the people of Singapore and Malaysia:¬†

¬†“Whereas it is the inalienable right of a people to be free and independent, I, Lee Kuan Yew, Prime Minister of Singapore, do hereby proclaim and declare on behalf of the people and the government of Singapore that as from today, the ninth day of August in the year one thousand nine hundred and sixty-five, Singapore shall be forever a sovereign, democratic and independent nation, founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the welfare and happiness of her people in a more just and equal society”. ” from The Singapore Story

From then on, it was nothing but handwork of 1.8 million citizens of then Malayan identity to build a new life for themselves. And build they did – in less than 50 years, the problems that once plagued us are today laughable. The progress we’ve realized would have been lofty, far-fetched dreams once upon a time.

Independent Singapore has only been around for 47 years and in this short time, we have sacrificed much. Yet this sacrifice has lifted our people out of poverty and have built us a strong economical platform and a firm foundation. Let us use this foundation and realize even loftier, even more far fetched dreams.

Here at Five Stars and a Moon, we would like to wish our fellow Singaporeans – Happy National Day!
